DAY 6 – THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF ADELE BLANC-SEC

Let’s face facts here: Luc Besson’s movies will never really make it over here in the US. I’m not saying that I don’t like a bunch of his movies, but rather that his style is just too…European for American audiences. His biggest hit here in the States was THE FIFTH ELEMENT and that only hit because Bruce Willis was the lead. I love that movie and most of his earlier work. I did have the chance to see VALERIAN recently and although it was quite a visual feast, its source material shares the same issue as my choice for the letter E. Like VALERIAN, Besson’s THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF ADELE BLANC-SEC (2010) is also adapted from a French comic book. Even when France’s most beloved comic, TINTIN, was adapted by Steven Spielberg, it fared fairly mediocre in the US market. While I basically enjoyed this light-hearted adventure flick and appreciated the quality of the CGI mummies, I feel that I would have appreciated it far better when I was 10 years old. Also, the look of the film seemed far too reminiscent of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s trademark style…
